Safety net for San Mateo County seniors
In today's economic climate, more older adults are finding themselves in need of essential services, according to Brenda Brown, employment services manager for the Senior Community Services Employment Program at the Family Service Agency of San Mateo County.
She works with seniors who seek employment or wish to start second careers, many of whom find themselves doubting their ability to manage on Social Security or retirement. "Some people in the age 55 and older bracket are losing their jobs today, when they don't qualify for Social Security and may not have a good retirement plan," she said.
People who've run into hard times and others living on limited incomes may benefit from a variety of community services.
Brown recommends the Help at Home guide published by the San Mateo County Commission on Aging as an excellent all-in-one resource.
"The guide offers practical information on a wide variety of services available to older county residents, from transportation assistance to nutritional options to legal help and so much more," she said.
"It's a must-have tool for seniors working to stay self-sufficient in today's challenging economy."
Most services in the guide are no-cost or low-cost, Brown says. Some have specific low-income requirements and others require a certain age - often 55 and older.
To obtain a printed copy of Help at Home in English, Chinese or Spanish, call (650) 573-2700. Or find it online at http://cip.plsinfo.org/publications.htm.
Another important resource is the TIES line, San Mateo County's 24-hour information and emergency response line: 1-800-675-8437.
The Senior Focus Community Resource Line can also provide assistance and information. The number is 650-696-3660.
"It's important to remember there's a lot of support out there. Don't be afraid to reach out and ask for help," Brown said.
She will speak on county services at "Senior Forum - Your Financial Health," Wednesday, March 18.
