Managing your medications — why it pays to shop around

Getting the best deal on a prescription may not always be top priority. Yet, today’s alternatives to the neighborhood pharmacy can make price comparisons worth your while, according to Mills-Peninsula pharmacy educator Aldona Manka, Pharm.D.

“Medicine is a commodity, just like any other consumer product,” she said. “That’s why you shouldn’t hesitate to call around and ask what it costs.” Sources like the Internet and mail order now offer viable alternatives, Dr. Manka said.

“Some pharmacies even give you lower prices online than if you take your prescription in.”

Mail order companies or specialty buying groups such as Costco also can be good sources for prescriptions at lower prices, she said.

“Mail in your prescription to set up an account, and they mail the medication to you,” she said.

“Some companies have an automatic reorder program, and online medication services can often provide you with a list of medications ordered within the last six months to a year.”

Keeping a list and knowing why you take each prescription is key to managing medications from various sources, she said.

“I suggest people develop a relationship with a local pharmacist who can answer questions,” she said.

Although the majority of states are required by law to give written information on how to take medicines, Dr. Manka suggests the following rule of thumb: Don’t leave the doctor’s office without the directions for use, even if you have to ask the receptionist to write it out clearly.

People should also be on guard against fraud, she warns. “There are some illegal vendors on the web — so look for a reputable company that requires a prescription.”

Dr. Manka will discuss other tips on buying and managing medications at a Wellness Center lecture in August.

“Managing Your Medicines – Consumer Tips,” will be held Thursday, Aug. 19, 7 – 8:30 p.m., Sierra Rooms, Peninsula Medical Center. Admission is $12/$8 age 62+.
